Materials

Four materials,
all UK-sourced.

We hold raw stock in all four materials at the Kent factory. No waiting on a steel mill, that's the reason our lead times don't slip.

Mild Steel
Gauge1.2, 1.5, 2.0, 3.0 mm
FinishPowder coat RAL 7035 std
IPIP66

Cost-effective for protected environments. Powder-coated to RAL colour of choice. Best suited for indoor or sheltered installations where stainless or GRP isn't required.

304 Stainless
Gauge1.2, 1.5, 2.0, 3.0 mm
FinishBrushed
IPIP66

General-purpose austenitic grade. Good corrosion resistance in most environments. Standard for food, beverage and pharmaceutical where chloride exposure is limited.

316 / 316L Stainless
Gauge1.2, 1.5, 2.0, 3.0 mm
FinishBrushed
IPIP66

Molybdenum-enhanced grade with superior chloride resistance. The marine and offshore standard. Specified for coastal, chemical and any environment with salt-spray exposure.

GRP / Polyester
GaugeP5 / SMC moulded
FinishMoulded GRP
IPIP66

Glass-reinforced polyester. Corrosion-proof, lightweight, non-conductive, non-magnetic. Specified where metallic enclosures are unsuitable, chemical, coastal, GRP-mandated specs.

IP ratings

Plain-English
ingress protection.

IP66 is the premium rating for industrial enclosures, dust-tight and protected against powerful water jets from any direction. IP68 is available where immersion resistance is required. See IEC 60529 for the full classification methodology.

IP66
Dust-tight. Powerful water jets from any direction. Standard for outdoor industrial installations.
IP68
Continuous immersion. Specified for below-deck, ground-level and wastewater installations.
Good to know

IP66 is the premium standard for most UK outdoor industrial installations, dust-tight and resistant to powerful water jets and pressure washing. IP68 is available on request for immersion applications.

Good to know

Our iMTB enclosures to sizes up to 580×410×220 are IP68 rated.

Common questions

Industrial enclosures, answered.

If your question isn't here, our engineering desk answers the same working day.

What is the difference between 304 and 316 stainless steel enclosures?
304 stainless steel is a general-purpose austenitic grade with good corrosion resistance in most environments. 316 (and 316L) adds molybdenum, which significantly improves resistance to chlorides, salt spray, seawater, and chloride-containing cleaning agents. For marine, offshore, coastal and pharmaceutical applications, 316L is the standard choice. For indoor food and beverage or general industrial environments where chloride exposure is limited, 304 is typically sufficient and lower cost.
What is a GRP enclosure?
A GRP (glass-reinforced polyester) enclosure is a non-metallic electrical enclosure moulded from fibreglass-reinforced polyester resin. GRP enclosures are corrosion-resistant, lightweight, non-magnetic and non-conductive, making them suitable for aggressive chemical environments, coastal installations and applications where metallic enclosures are not appropriate. They are commonly specified for water treatment, chemical processing and coastal utility installations.
What IP rating do I need for outdoor use?
IP66 is the standard for outdoor industrial enclosures; dust-tight and protected against powerful water jets and pressure washing from any direction. indEx's enclosures are rated as IP66 by default; IP68 rating available on request. indEx does not offer IP67 rating.
What is the difference between a junction box and a terminal box?
A terminal box contains terminal blocks,it is used to connect, distribute or terminate cables in a fixed installation. A junction box is a broader term for an enclosure used to connect cables, which may or may not contain terminal blocks. In practice, our iTB range is supplied with or without terminals to customer specification, and the terms are often used interchangeably in the UK industrial market.
Can you supply custom-sized enclosures with a short lead time?
Yes,custom sizing is standard for us, not a special order. We manufacture enclosures to your exact dimensions from 250×150×130 for hinged terminal boxes and from 120×120×90 for bolted lid junction boxes. We hold raw stock in all four materials, quote the same working day, and deliver the majority of orders in 3–4 weeks.
